The latest phase of the UK Government’s ambition to bring Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) to life took another key step forward last week, with a Call for submissions from organisations wanting to take part in Phase-1 of the CCUS cluster sequencing process.  CCUS was a key pillar of the UK Government’s Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, where the ambition was set to deploy CCUS in two industrial clusters by the mid-2020s, and a further two clusters by 2030, with the aim of capturing 10 MtCO₂ per year by 2030.

Jonathan Oxley, the Humber Cluster Plan Manager said, “CCUS is a vital element in the strategy to decarbonise UK industry, and it underpins the UK’s road to Net Zero.  This next stage of the process will seek to identify where CCUS facilities will be first developed in the UK in support of Industrial Clusters by the end of October 2021.  Humber industry represents almost 40% of the CO2 emissions identified within UK Clusters, so developing a roadmap to tackle these emissions using CCUS will be pivotal in delivering a greener future for Industry, for the Humber, and for the UK as a whole.”

“We look forward to supporting our private sector partners* and organisations across the Humber area in their efforts to ensure the region is in the vanguard of bringing CCUS to fruition, ensuring our industry can play its part in tackling climate change, and generating benefits for people, places and businesses across the community.
